Continuing our Spring Movie Preview, here is an exclusive new look at Lili Reinhart in Meredith Alloway‘s ‘FORBIDDEN FRUITS,’ debuting in theaters tomorrow, March 27.
Written by Meredith Alloway and Llily Houghton, ‘FORBIDDEN FRUITS‘ follows Free Eden employee Apple, who secretly runs a witchy femme cult in the basement of the mall store after hours – with fellow fruits Cherry and Fig. But when new hire Pumpkin challenges their performative sisterhood, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate.
Reinhart came on board early, long before production, and stayed closely involved as the project moved through multiple drafts. She returned to her character, Apple, each time the script shifted, refining her understanding of the character as it took shape. Over time, her connection to Apple deepened alongside the writing, growing more specific with each new version of the script.
“I had Apple in my head for years,” she explains. “I tracked her emotional and visual evolution as the script changed.”
Apple sits at the center of the group, confident, magnetic, and carefully guarded. She shapes the upstairs rituals and sets the rules of the coven, holding everything in place. Alloway calls her “the creator of Paradise, of this coven,” someone “who so desperately wants to be a sister and to create a sisterhood, and yet holds this quiet power in her.”
From the start, Alloway and writer Lily Houghton knew the role needed someone who could hold both authority and softness without losing either. As Alloway recalls, “We got off the Zoom with Lili and said, ‘We’re scared of her. She’s amazing,’ because she held so much power and warmth at the same time.”
Reinhart leaned into that duality. What drew her in was how Apple can feel intimidating from the outside, while everything underneath is shaped by fear, mistrust and old wounds. She approached the role with that tension in mind, letting both sides exist at once: the one leading the rituals, controlling the space, and the one still trying to protect herself.
With an all-star cast including Reinhart, Lola Tung, Victoria Pedretti, Alexandra Shipp, Gabrielle Union and Emma Chamberlain, ‘FORBIDDEN FRUITS‘ debuts in theaters tomorrow, March 27.
